Turtles are one of the most beautiful and endearing creatures on our planet. Steve came to learn this and all about them from working on conservation projects, helping rescued turtles and releasing them back into the wild. This inspired him to learn to scuba dive as he wanted to be able to see them below sea level and it was here where his creative fire was really ignited. Being able to see the grace of movement and elegance they possess in the water inspired him, so much so that they have become one of his favourite subjects and bestsellers, this being his third portrayal.

This is the biggest Turtle sculpture Steve has created to date and the only solo one, he created this piece standing alone which differs from his previous as he wanted to make the dynamics of this underwater marvel the focal point. The way this work is poised creates a wonderful composition which is very eye catching and with the textures he has created both by sculpting and in the bronze craftsmanship, the longer you look at it the more you feel as though you are submerged below sea level watching the turtle glide elegantly through the water.

The latest collection from Steve Winterburn – “The Timeless Collection” – Fall 2023

This new collection has been a long time in the making and is a real passion driven project for both Steve and Winterburn Fine Art, the core values of the project are built around the fact that we as a planet are running out of time to save our beautiful animals and environment.

To illustrate this Steve decided on the ellipse structure which resembles the two main focal points, our planet and time. It represents the dial of a time keeping device in its simplest form but further to that he pictures the spherical presence of the planet extending from the structure virtually encapsulating the sculpture in the centre. The subject poised in the centre in this way, as though it is captivated in a moment in time, creates a real atmosphere with the artwork which draws you in to the narrative behind the piece. All the component parts of the design start unfolding before you to tell its story, that if we don’t act fast together as a planet then we will run out of time to protect and save our animals and they could well become a moment in time, gone.

As the project progressed through its creation another angle came to the piece which had a lot of meaning to Steve. The sculpture being framed in an ellipse like it is being captured through a lens, became a real drive in the creative process of this design. Photography has been a huge part of his life and career with most of his reference being from his own images, so Steve pursued and expanded this idea. In his research phase into the lens and photography standpoint he discovered the definition of aperture “a space through which light passes”, this summarises the composition of the design with the subject sculpture being the “light” and the ellipse and spherical space being that which it passes through. Steve likes the idea of the animal and subject of the design being the light as he sees them as exactly that in our lives, talking on this point he said, “wherever we come across animals they give us life and energy, bringing a light into our lives”.

As the construction phase of the design began Steve felt that the addition of movement would bring a whole new dimension to this project and the sculptures that come in the collection. After many hours of designing and working out the engineering, a base which allows the ellipse and sculpture to swivel and spin so that it can complete a full 360-degree rotation was completed. This allows the sculpture and design to be seen from every angle no matter where it is situated.

After many years of planning and designing this collection, it is great to finally see the designs come to fruition. The composition and contemporary visuals, with the contrast of the stainless-steel ellipse system to the bronze sculpture brings a whole new impact to the works of Steve Winterburn. When combined with the wholehearted passion of the story behind this collection, this project becomes one of Steves most powerful creations to date.
