Steve Winterburn’s rooted inspiration falls back to the classics and masters of yesteryears. The intertwining of myths and legends, with the world of sculpture and art was something that captivated him from an early age.
One that has always stood out to him is Prometheus, both for names sake and the story behind it. The titan that created mankind has always created intrigue more than others because of his power of creation, resonating deeply with his own artistic urges. Steve wanted to create an artwork that captured this story but with a difference and not just by capturing the titan in sculpture.
For millennia, Horses have helped man to create the world as we know it, helping man create, build, and grow. So, Steve saw this as the perfect envoy for the legend of Prometheus.
This sculpture is built around its heavy, rugged textures with Steve using big lumps of clay and cumbersome tooling work to portray the feel of stone as though an ancient relic from centuries ago. This harsh surfacing created is completely juxtaposed to the delicate and balanced composition designed and masterfully crafted by Winterburn, the large body of metal, flows round from the focal point of the head to the elegant support it stands upon.
This peace is a lovely contrast of contemporary sculpture with traditional iconography at its core and inspiration, that captures an audience as a talking point wherever it is situated.
