Steve Winterburn has spent a lot of time with horses and even more so this past year spending hours upon hours studying some of the best warmblood stock in the country at Hope House Stud. The focus of this study has been on gaining the ability to capture these magnificent animals to the highest accuracy, having that confidence frees up his artistic flair and allows him to really express the movement and power of the piece more. “Free Spirit” combines these disciplines perfectly.
The aim of the sculpture is to depict the liberating, unconfined movement of a horse exploding full of energy and power, it is this pure moment which always catches Steve’s eye in their presence. He has conveyed this beautifully with the free-flowing composition giving the essence of energy bursting from the piece, with big expressive tool marks adding to this dynamic feel, but still complimenting the accuracy of the horse which lies as a foundation of the artwork.
This piece commands an audience in any space, the energy of spirit and character captured, partnered with the overarching dynamism created with its incredible texture and poise, give it a drawing warmth which makes you connect on a level as the experiencing that moment of freedom with the horse first-hand.
