Steve Winterburn volunteered for over a decade working around the world as a trustee for wildlife conservation. During those years he saw many horrific things, the most consistent of those namely was poaching of the beautiful animals he was so passionate about protecting. This trauma eventually led to Steve bringing his voluntary work to a stop as it was too difficult for him to continue seeing.
This limited edition sculpture is a contemporary twist on his more traditional wildlife sculptures. The idea behind the piece being the tiger is “dressed to kill” both metaphorically and as a physical image of turning the tables on the poachers. Steve chose the tiger to portray this image as he has worked closely with them in India alongside the late “tiger guru” Fateh Singh and learned incredible amounts about the species whilst on conservation projects.
The anthropomorphic angle was inspired from the early Victorian paintings. Steve wanted to recreate this traditional almost hunting feel with this piece, even though at its core it’s a very contemporary sculpture.
