Research Trip to Kenya – 2024

For those of you who follow Steve Winterburn and his journey, you will know the accuracy and feel he creates when sculpting wildlife is achieved through gaining experience with these animals in their natural habitat, he says “you can’t get a real sense of what these great creatures are about in zoos, you have to observe them in their wild surroundings to see their true characteristics and be able to portray that through sculpture”. Steve has spent the past 30 years exploring the planet both on land and below sea studying future subjects, this past week he has just returned from one of his favourite places to do exactly that; Kenya.

Due to the volume of commissions and orders, this trip had to be short and sharp a 10 day stint, though shorter than his trips in years gone by he was blessed with sightings of most of Africa’s big name species; Lions, Cheetahs, Elephants, Hippos, Kudo, Buffalo, just to name a few. There is nothing like these once in a life time first-hand experiences for a creator like Steve to boost inspiration and ideas for new sculptures and projects.

On his return Steve, as usual, has a mass of ideas that he wants to frantically express in form of new sculptures showcasing more of the amazing wildlife Kenya has to offer, as he has done with many sell out collections over the years. These will probably come in the form of around 4 to 5 new pieces in a collection, some of which sound like the most impressive and dynamic pieces to date, so be sure to keep an eye out with his social media and newsletter for these coming through!

Overall it was an amazing trip for Steve both for inspiration and for sentiment, explaining this he said “for me Kenya and its amazing wildlife is where it all began for me, so returning here is always such a heartwarming experience as I feel I owe so much to this beautiful country”.

Thanks for reading and we can’t wait to be able to show you the new collections when they start to flourish in the studio.
