Sculptor
As a long serving trustee and wildlife conservationist enthusiast, Steve has travelled the world gaining inspiration and knowledge about animals. He began expressing the inspiration through painting, but with an engineering background, it wasn’t long before he taught himself to sculpt and then later launched his own family run studio and foundry in 2002. The business has now flourished and boasts more than 30 years of experience in delivering a huge number of challenging and varied commissions.
Steve is a world renowned sculptor and works with a number of well established names from the fine-art world, including: Halcyon Gallery, Carrs Silver, Monaco Fine Arts, Hickmet Fine Arts, Sotheby’s, Christies, LAPADA and BADA. Having worked with precious metals for many years, Steve and his family have developed the specialist skills required to work with silver and gold and have been granted their own British Hallmark. Sports fans may also be familiar with his flagship piece at Wembley Stadium: this spectacular bronze commissioned by the charity Rugby League Cares, features five legends of Rugby League which is now considered a Wembley landmark in its own right.
Director
From an early age Ben demonstrated a keen interest in the lost wax process, having grown up in and around the studio. He started showing a real interest in 2012, where at the age of 15 he took part in his first bronze pour. From here it was clear that casting art and the family legacy were to become his passion. At the age of 18 he left college to pursue his dream of building the Winterburn legacy and has never looked back.
Ben began by shadowing his father, focusing mainly on the craftsmanship of the fine art industry, which covers everything from mould making through to the casting and finishing of the bronzes. Now with over 10 years of experience as a fine art craftsman and foundryman, his bronze work has become his forte.
Now Ben has honed his skill set, the Winterburn legacy and brand has become a real focus and driving force for Ben and a key facet to his role in the company. Marketing, sales and social media are his main focal points for this. In 2022, after 7 years of being full time working within the family business, learning the ropes and eventually bringing his own ideas and visions to the company, Ben is now Director.
Director of administration
Joy is a cofounder and fulltime member of the team, having been involved in most aspects of the bronze casting process over the years. The majority of her efforts are now focused in the wax room, specifically, preparing lost wax patterns for casting. This entails creating the wax from a mould, mounting, spruing and preparing for the ceramic shelling.
Joy also spends a lot of time on the administrative side of the business and is quite often a first point of contact. She is also charge with the all-important task of keeping the team fed and watered!
Sculptor
From being a young child Roxy has always had an affinity for all things creative and growing up surrounded in art and sculpture lead her to eventually pursue her own career in art. Although she did achieve her first-class honours degree in Chemistry with forensic science and toxicology first. All through her academia Roxy still enjoyed working in the foundry in her spare time. At first she spent time mastering the different aspects of casting bronze sculpture under the guidance of her father Steve Winterburn, helping him with his work and learning along the way. He then encouraged her to develop her skills in sculpting and she now does sculptures in her own style which she chooses to portray animals in a cute and endearing way. Roxy enjoys being part of every part of the process of creating the bronze from the sculpting to the final finishing piece.
